Why password reuse is the real danger

Most accounts aren’t broken into by someone guessing your password. If you used the same password on your email, your shopping account, and your bank, one breach anywhere can unlock all of them.

For most people, the convenience of secure cloud sync wins. The privacy-maximalist local approach is excellent too, as long as you’re disciplined about your own backups.

Beyond the basics of storing and generating passwords, useful extras include:

  • A security audit / dashboard that flags weak, reused, or breached passwords so you can fix them.
  • Breach monitoring that alerts you if an account shows up in a known data leak.
  • Secure sharing, so you can give a trusted person access to a specific login without texting it in plain sign.
  • Cross-platform support for every device and browser you actually use — a manager that doesn’t work where you do creates friction.
  • Encrypted storage for more than passwords — secure notes, recovery codes, and the like.

How to choose one

Weigh these factors:

  • Reputation and track record. Choose an established option, and look at how the company has handled any past security incidents — transparency and a fast, honest response matter more than a spotless record.
  • Strong encryption with a clear zero-knowledge model.
  • Ease of use. A manager you find clunky is one you’ll fight or abandon. The best tool is the one you’ll actually use every day.
  • The devices and browsers you use — make sure it covers all of them.
  • Free vs. paid. Good free tiers exist; paid plans typically add cross-device sync, more storage, and extra features. For most people the modest cost of a reputable paid plan is well worth it.

  1. Pick a manager and create a strong, unique master password — ideally a memorable passphrase. This is the one you protect with your life.
  2. Turn on two-factor authentication for the manager itself, immediately.
  3. Import or add your existing logins. Most tools can import saved browser passwords to speed this up.
  4. Run the security audit and fix the worst offenders first — your reused and weak passwords on important accounts (email and banking especially). Replace them with generated ones, a few at a time.
  5. Let it generate passwords going forward. From now on, every new account gets a unique, random password you never have to think about.
